Can I be a writer/author with a BS psychology degree ?
If you are asking if a psychology degree qualifies you to write - not at all. The style of writing in essays is entirely different to fiction writing, which is a whole separate learning curve.
If on the other hand you are asking if a psychology degree is helpful - yes, it would be. It will help you to understand how people work as part of writing better characters. But so will almost all life experiences. And a psychology degree (or any degree for that matter) isn’t necessary.
So if you’re interested in studying psychology, by all means, study psychology. If you want to become a writer, by all means, learn how to write. They are two separate things.
Just remember, you can learn about people by reading relevant materials, and just studying people. Sit at a cafe or on a park bench or in the mall and watch people and how they behave. Watch reality tv shows - very good for looking at how people respond to situations. Look at the people you know, who they are, and think about what in their past might have contributed to the way they are. (don’t forget to have a good look at yourself).
If you do a degree in psychology, it should be because that’s what you want to do.
Will getting a psychology degree help me in being a philosopher ?
Why don’t you get a philosophy degree instead? That would help you more in being a philosopher- if you mean by that a job for making a living.
However, if you were thinking about being a philosopher, like in philosophising, your life problems will scoff at any piece of paper having a title like ‘Doctor in Philosophy’, regardless of the big names certifying your intellectual efforts. To find meaning in being and a way out of suffering you can only start from where you are- with the self you know directly, not from books or words of others. All you need is total earnestness in looking at yourself- there is where the truth resides, where the world appears and where God’s silence is heard, if you know how to look and listen. Use logic and reason in dispelling myths and prejudices you’ve accepted from others as true; toss them aside and look with fresh eyes, beyond concepts and ideas, beyond the mind- ‘reality begins where the mind ends’. Being a philosopher is contemplating the continuous transition of the slippery phenomenal world in the eternity of yourself.
If you have a decent job with a psychology degree, why do some people say it’s useless ?
What I define as a decent job, and what I can enjoy, is much different than other people.
I learned some time ago what I find terrible. I despise being forced to go against my ethical instincts. Maybe that’s silly, many of my prior employers seemed to think so. I also cannot stand to find myself incompetent, again this is something that I’ve had trouble finding others who understand.
I have a good job, where my employer has stronger ethics than I do. It took me thirty years of looking. From the minute I can remember opening my eyes on this world I knew that men usually had a job, and that job was very much at the whim of a company or organisation. I watched as faithless companies betrayed my parents, over and over, until I vowed that I would not rest until betraying me was the biggest mistake a company could make.
I work in a field that others hate, and probably don’t understand. I work in child welfare, helping hurting families and children try and do a bit better. I see terrible things some days, but also amazing things. Some days are more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. That’s why I do what I do, for the good days here and there. If it means a few bad days, I can live with that.
I don’t make amazing money, and I certainly could make more were I so motivated. Most people don’t realise how much money controls their decisions, and what an amazing luxury it is to do work that you enjoy. I get that, and I certainly didn’t deserve it. I only followed where my talents led and there was money to be made, and now I’m here at a job I could do until I’m dead if I felt so inclined. What a gift.
I struggle sometimes, and I hurt. Sometimes I wonder that most horrible of things; “what if?” The only way to know that is to make it happen. We can only be in one place at a time, and that is the cruellest reality of them all. I think mine is a good life, one rich with purpose and love which are the things I value most.
I don’t know if this path is for you. The reality is that you will either make it the path for you or you won’t. Everything appears pointless by someone’s estimation. I can’t understand working 100 hours a week, no matter how large the paycheck is that’s too much for me. I can’t imagine sacrificing my ethics for a job, it would be agony for me.
I can make do with less. I am adept at that particular thing. I can enjoy the worst job in the world, so long as I am allowed to be good at it, and ethical. Thus runs my motivation. What motivates you will unavoidably pull you into a lifestyle that reflects it.
Can you do nursing with a psychology degree ?
Where can I get a recognised psychology degree online?
Is psychology a useless degree? What are the jobs for a psychology degree? Can I earn a successful salary from it ?
As there are so many psych grads you need a masters for the most basic counselling jobs. The good money comes with a PhD.
But with only a bachelors you only really qualify for the shrinking number of positions where they want you to have a degree but do not care in what.
Some suggestions are in law enforcement or in the penal system.
